Numbers 13 Questions

Warm up in pairs:   In this chapter, Caleb and Joshua were in the minority,  but they were in the right.   Has there been a time in your life that you were in a similar situation that you would be willing to share?

Numbers 13:17-20

  1. What similarities do you see between the 12 men scouting out Canaan and a sports team scouting an upcoming opponent?
  2. There were three specific things Moses wanted to find out about-the land, the people, and the cities.    What specifically did he want to know about each?
    1. The land?   What it’s like, good or bad, fertile or unproductive, trees in it?
    2. The people?   Strong or weak, few or many
    3. The cities?  Encampments or fortifications
  3. He told them to be courageous.   Why did he tell them that?   There was a certain amount of risk and danger involved in scouting out a strange land.
  4. Have there been assignments the Lord has given to you and the church in general that require a certain amount of courage?
  5. Why do you think Moses wanted to know?   What did he tell them to bring back in 13:20?  Fruit

 Numbers 13:21-25

  1. Why do you think the three descendants of Anak were specifically mentioned in 13:22?    Teachers, see p. 40 in your teacher’s book for background about Hebron and the Anakim, who were ironically later defeated by Joshua and Caleb.  See also the article on 45-46 about the Nephilim and Anakim.
  2. When the Israelites later passed thru the Wilderness of Zin, what did Moses do that resulted in he and Aaron not being allowed to enter the promised land?   See Numbers 20:2-5, 8-12    Moses struck the rock in anger
  3. What did the spies do in the Eshcol Valley with large cluster of grapes?   A. Called Lucy and Ethel to stomp on them   B. Made wine out of them to get the locals drunk so they could get more information out of them.   C. Two men carried them out on a single pole.   D. Made grape juice and set up a stand to raise money for the trip back home.

 Numbers 13:26-31

  1. Refer back to question 2 in the first section.   What report did they give for each of the assigned areas?
    1. Land-flowing with milk and honey and they showed them some of the fruit
    2. People-strong, i.e. the descendants of Anak.  They were big, real big.
    3. Cities-large and fortified
  2. In Numbers 13:28, 31 they reported that the people were strong.   Do you think that was accurate or maybe an exaggeration after seeing the descendants of Anak, thinking all the people were strong, real strong?
  3. What was Caleb’s report?   Let’s roll.  We can take them.
  4. How did the 10 of the 12 spies report?   Can’t do it.  They are stronger than us.
  5. Who did the 10 have their eyes on?   The strong.     Who did the 2 have their eyes on?   Their strong Lord.
  6. As we engage in spiritual battle, who should we keep our eyes on?
  7. Even when we are in the minority, should we be willing to speak up in matters related to building God’s kingdom?
