If you have recently received Christ, let me congratulate you on the most important decision in your life. To strengthen you in your relationship with the Lord, there are things you can do.
First, begin to spend time reading and studying God’s Word, the Bible. If you do not have a Bible, let me encourage you to select a translation that you can understand. The NIV and NLT are accurate, but also very readable. For more in depth study, you might consider the NASB.
There are 66 books in the Bible, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. I suggest beginning with the Gospel of Mark or John in the New Testament.
Second, begin to spend time alone with God each day in prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. As you grow in your prayer life and spend more time in prayer, try to include a time of praise and thanksgiving. Begin to pray for others, beginning with your own family. Pray for those you know who have not yet accepted Christ. And don’t forget to pray for yourself. There is no prayer request too small or too big for the Lord.
I suggest beginning a prayer list. This can be as simple as some type of composition or spiral bound notebook. I am in the process of putting together three ring binder mini (8 ½ x 5 ½) prayer notebooks that will be available to order from my web page in the near future. It will have various articles about prayer, as well as fill in the blank prayer request pages for various categories of people to prayer for.
Thirdly, find a Bible teaching/preaching and outreach-oriented church to attend and eventually join. This may involve the process of visiting various churches in your area. If you have friends who have also received Christ, consider asking them which church they attend. Most who are searching for a church home will begin by attending a worship service. Equally important is to attend a small group Bible study that is usually offered before or after a worship service. This are often organized by life stages. The group you join will be your connection point to the church plus you will learn more about the Bible and the Christian life.
Once you find the church that is for you, let the pastor or other staff minister know that you have received Christ and want to be baptized. Baptism is not essential for salvation, but it is the first step of obedience. Your pastor can talk with you further about that.
Most churches offer a group for new believers that could last from four to six weeks. I have taught such a group for many years in various churches. Such a group will give you the basics. We would also invite new church members to be a part of such a group, and many told me that they never had anything like that when they first came to Christ. Take advantage of such a group while you are young in the faith. You will be so glad you did.
Fourth, begin to share with family and friends about your decision to follow Jesus. Those who have already received Christ will rejoice with you. Others may not know what to think, but you have planted a seed with them that grow to the point so they too will eventually receive Jesus.
