Warm up in pairs or small groups: David talks about roads he has traveled today. What is the most distant place you have ever traveled to from your home?
- Why was the Lord able to search and know all about David? 139:1 He is omniscient.
- How do you think it made David feel? How does it make you feel when you realize that the Lord knows all about you?
- Does the fact that the Lord knows all about us comfort you or convict you?
- Think of a time that Jesus demonstrated his omniscience. The woman at the well in John 4:17-18,29.
- If your life is like a pizza with all its various pieces or aspects, which of these pieces is Jesus not aware of?
- Does God still love us even when he knows everything about us?
- Name one person that knows you better than the Lord.
- What does the fact that the Lord knows you tell you about him? He cares about you.
- Which places had David traveled that the Lord did not know about? 139:2
- When did the Lord know what David was going to say-before he said it or after he said it according to 139:4
- What do the following verses have to say about the Lord’s knowledge about every step (Job 31:4), our heart’s attitude (Jeremiah 12:3) and our coming and going (II Kings 19:27)?
- Jonah tried to run and hide from God? How did that work for him? See Jonah 1:3-10. If you have ever tried to run and hide from God, how did that work for you?
- Why is it important that our children learn the teachings of 139:1-4? Charles Stanley has said this is one of the most important teachings our children need to learn.
- What is the implied answer to 139:7? No place
- What pattern do you notice in 139:9-12? They are all opposite extremes
- Acts 1:11 confirms the location of heaven. Where is it? Who went there?
- What insight does Amos 9:2 give us about Sheol and Heaven?
- Jesus spoke about the (right) hand of God holding on to us as well. Read John 10:28-29 to see what he said.
- David gives an interesting lesson about darkness and light. Why are kids often afraid of the dark. Could it be the fear of the unknown-not knowing what is out there?
- Which is more magnificent-the human body or the universe? Both are works created by God and equally amazing.
- The word in the original sometimes translated as “unformed substance” or “formless” most likely refers to the human being in embryo form. Did God see David when he was in that form? Does he see every human being in that form? What implications does that concept have for the sanctity of life? Barnes: “Before the embryo has any such form that its future size, shape or proportions could be marked by the eye of man, it was clearly and distinctly known by God.” 139:16
- Do you remember from the Four Spiritual Laws tract this line? “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.” Discuss that in light of 139:16b.
- How does David’s closing prayer in 139:23-24 refer back to 139:1? Would that be a prayer we should pray regularly?
